Books you can read in a day
We all love a quick book, and these are some of my favourites that you can read in one sitting or over the course of one day.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The ultimate American classic. This 144-page novel is the epitome of a great read. Highly literary but also raunchy and packed full of historical detail. A great past-time book, that everyone should read at least once. Jay Gatsby throws legendary parties in 1920s America, but it’s all for one woman, the married Daisy Buchanan.
We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
If non-fiction is more your bag, then why not pick up the 64-page We Should All Be Feminists? An important read detailing the simplest reasons why equality is so important in the current day and age. From educating children on the topic of feminism to questioning your understanding of it. This book is a pocket must-read.
Little Black Book by Otegha Uwagba
A 129-page book. It’s all about standing out and standing up a work. Uh, yes, please. For anyone, but particularly females, who have ever felt silenced or invisible in the workplace. Read the Little Black Book to reinvigorate your career.
Perfume by Patrick Suskind
This 272-page read is a slightly longer book on this list, however, it is gripping! And trust me when I say it does not feel like 272 pages. There is no other book out there quite like this, in my opinion. This is an intoxicating historical, horror, murder mystery with a psychological and philosophical plot written in glorious, lyrical prose. We follow Jean-Baptise, who has the best nose in the world and is obsessed with creating the perfect scent. But wherever he goes death follows. It is visceral and addictive.
The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
This 240-page book is one of my top three favourites of all time. Spanning three eras of a man’s life, the first when he is 15 and having an affair with a much older woman, the second when he is slightly older and studying to become a lawyer, and then the third, much later in life when the affair with the woman and the choices he made during his education come together. A piece of perfect historical, literary fiction in set during the years after World War II.
Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen
Famously remembered for the movie – Angelina Jolie stole the crown from Winona Ryder as the leading actress - this story was originally a 194-page memoir. An easy-to-read, yet harrowing story of a woman’s time in a mental hospital in the 1960s. Girl, Interrupted is dark but addictive.
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata
Lastly, a brilliant translated piece of fiction at just 176 pages. Convenience Store Woman follows a woman who is working in a convenience store and is happy to do so, regardless of what others want from her. Fun, easy and a gentle read to escape into on a commute or a relaxing weekend. It’s weird, but fun.
